Why pay for website design when there are free website builders?

Website builders such as Wix and Weebly offer out-of-the-box solutions. Those solutions can be a great place to start. However, they are rarely sufficient as you grow. In the long run, they may cost you time, money and potential. Thus they are not really "free". This article covers some of the issues around why pay for website design.

Questions to consider

Here are some questions to consider when deciding what solution to use for building your website.

  • What happens when your design or functionality requirements become "outside" the box?
  • How do you feel about fine-tuning within the builder to maximise your website's potential?
  • What will happen when you run into trouble?
  • What are your longer-term goals for this website?
  • Is being found on Google important?

Consider WordPress

If you want something basic and affordable website, a self-installed WordPress site is a better place to start than free website builders such as Wix or Weebly. WordPress is built around a core set of features sufficient for a basic website. It will also offer the capacity to add functionality, search engine optimisation, custom design, unique content and social media integrations, RSS feeds for Newsletters, etc., when needed later. But there are a few barriers to entry: hiring a professional requires more technical know-how or just a little bit of money.

We offer a budget start-up option to overcome these barriers to entry: Small Business Website Project Price Options.

Why pay for web design at all?

If you hire a professional WordPress web designer, you will start on the right foot and have access to a wealth of knowledge and experience. I offer WordPress services; I am happy to work to your budget, providing the technical skills you need and advise on the best approach.

Most web designers, including myself, would dedicate several hours weekly to keep up with changes and improvements. Not everyone wants to go through that learning curve. Especially if it will cost you the business because your site is still under construction. Is your website turning away customers because it looks unprofessional, or is it not found on Google? If you enjoy new challenges and have the time, WordPress can be fun and satisfying to learn. There are some excellent courses on Lynda.com. You can gain access to them for free with an Auckland library card! Learning WordPress was a fun hobby and a satisfying passion.

WordPress Web Design Services

When you purchase website design services from us, we also offer guidance and strategy for you to get the most out of your website. We can put you in touch with other service providers, such as copywriters, logo designers and hosting companies we know to offer excellent value for money. We can quickly get you over those initial learning curves and have you add value to your website.

In summary, Wix, Weebly and other template builders may offer a beginning point for your website. However, despite higher barriers to entry, I suggest that WordPress offers a better option regarding your time, money, and potential.
